If you're a business owner who's never had a CTO, the term can sound like something reserved for venture-backed startups or large enterprises. In practice, a fractional CTO is simply an experienced technology executive who works with your business part-time, or as-needed, instead of full-time.

Here's what that actually looks like:

**Strategic technology decisions.** A fractional CTO helps you decide where to invest in technology and why — tying every recommendation back to your business goals rather than the latest trend.

**Risk management.** Cybersecurity, vendor lock-in, aging infrastructure, single points of failure — a fractional CTO identifies these risks before they become expensive problems.

**Vendor and platform oversight.** Instead of evaluating software vendors on your own (or leaving it to whoever's loudest in the room), a fractional CTO brings an independent, experienced perspective to vendor selection and management.

**Team and process leadership.** If you have developers or an IT team, a fractional CTO provides the technical leadership and process discipline that keeps projects on track — without the overhead of a full executive salary.

**A seat at the leadership table.** Perhaps most importantly, a fractional CTO makes sure technology has a voice in business decisions — and that business realities have a voice in technology decisions.

How is this different from hiring an IT consultant? A consultant is typically brought in for a specific project or problem. A fractional CTO is a longer-term, strategic partner — someone who understands your business as a whole and helps guide technology decisions over time, the way a full-time executive would, just at a fraction of the cost and commitment.

If your business has outgrown ad-hoc technology decisions but isn't ready for a full-time hire, that's exactly the gap a fractional CTO is built to fill.
